Experience

I've taught college level history courses for community colleges in the Seattle area for about 10 years. In addition to teaching in a traditional classroom setting, I have taught online classes since the beginning of my teaching career. I have experience with online course management systems including Angel, Blackboard, Blackboard VISTA and Canvas. Just as in the classroom, I was developer and manager of all content of my online classes, and I was responsible for grading all assignments, plus responding to emails and messages from students. Although not an IT professional, I did help students with technology issue related to the online classes. I am familiar with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. During my employment at Bellevue College the department chair assigned to me with developing a new history course offering for the college. I was to take an existing course and develop an online counterpart to the classroom section. The course dealt with the history of exploration and discovery. The formal title is History 242: The Age of Exploration & Discovery. During my employment at Edmonds Community College I was allowed to create a new history class. I sought permission from the department chair to develop and offer a new history class detailing the history of the Second World War. In 2012 I participated in sexual harassment training while employed at Bellevue College. In addition I received sexual harassment and diversity training from Edmonds Community College. My graduate writing seminar paper consisted of one year of intense historical research. The topic dealt with amphibious warfare in the 18th century and was entitled British Amphibious Warfare, 1757-1801. This paper was nominated for the graduate research award in 2005 by my graduate advisor, Professor Martin Seedorf. I presented a research paper at the Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference in Sun Valley, Idaho in April 2005. The paper, Military Myths and Realities of the American War, 1775-178, analyzed and evaluated irregular warfare during the American Revolution. The goal of the paper was to challenge preexisting ideas about the topic. While a graduate student, I conducted historical research on several military history topics. This work was done outside my normal studies, enhancing my historical research skills. For each I researched and gathered historical data and evidence and presented my research to a student audience. The research and presentation topics were Suez Canal Crisis 1956, Falklands War 1982, Hundred Years War 1337-1453, Fourth Crusade/Latin Empire 1203-1261, Anglo-French Wars; War of Spanish Succession, War of Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years War and Battle of Manizkert and the Fourth Crusade These six research projects were conducted from March 2004 to May 2005. In January 2005 I served on the American Historical Association Conference Local Arrangements Committee as a paid student worker and participated in the conference held in Seattle. During my final year of graduate school I was selected to become a teaching assistant at Eastern Washington University, which I did from September 2004 until graduate with my Master’s Degree in June 2005. I have a deep passion and interest in education and study of the past. I love learning and discovering new things. Reading is very important to me. I want to share my love for learning and especially my passion for history with as many students as I can. Some of my former students have been admitted to universities like Cornell and Stanford
